London & SE section presentation: Update on the 4LM (London Underground’s subsurface lines) resignalling programme
23 Feb 2023 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Section: This hybrid meeting has been arranged by the IRSE London and South East section (londonse@irse.org)

Join the London & South East section for their hybrid technical meeting, hearing an update on the 4LM resignalling programme.

The 4 Line Modernisation (4LM) Project is a much needed re-signalling of the oldest underground system in the world, the Subsurface Railway (SSR). The Subsurface railway consists of the Metropolitan Line, the Hammersmith and City Line, the Circle Line, and the District Line. 7 and 8 car passenger trains as well as Engineering Vehicles are equipped to run within the Communication Based Train Control system. The project will also re-signal some interoperable areas which adds to the complexity of this already challenging project.

The re-signalling project uses Thales’s 21st century SelTrac technology to implement a highly reliable, high performance railway in the SSR’s brownfield environment. It is Thales’s largest ever implementation of its SelTrac Communication Based Train Control (CBTC) System. The system makes use of modern transponder and Wi-Fi technologies to provide a semi-automatic (STO) signalling system (Grade of Automation 2 – GoA 2). The project has successfully commissioned 6 of 11 Subsurface Migration Areas (SMAs), which are currently serving passengers in central London. Testing is ongoing in an additional 3 SMAs.

This presentation is a technical overview of the system and the approach taken. In addition to the high level views of the system and the project approach, it peels the layers of technology back and describes some of the key challenges and approaches. The presentation will concentrate on the technical implementation and field experiences of people working on the system on a regular basis with particular focus on Automatic Train Control (ATC).
