Presidential lecture No.4 - Safety principles of CBTC systems, software and communications
01 Dec 2022 6:15 PM - 8:15 PM
Section: For further details, please contact events@irse.org

Join us for the 4th Presidential lecture in Andy Knight's series on the theme 'shaping the future' with Boyd McKillican (Systra) talking about the safety principles of CBTC systems, software and communications

Safety standards for Communications-Based Train Control (CBTC) systems in current use today have been published since 1999. Boyd McKillican will examine the relevant standards and their
interrelationships. Some of the standards define the acceptable types of designs and architectures for railway electronic and software safety systems that ranging from best practices to legal requirements. The communication between vital processors and how safety responsibility is allocated is critical to the safe operation of a CBTC system. The
dependence on network reliability and availability, as well as cybersecurity, is examined in context. Some example design patterns and processes will illustrate how the standards can be applied.

This event is part of the IRSE 5th CBTC and beyond conference being held in Toronto, Canada and the lecture will also be livestreamed (no registration required) and recorded. It will start at 13:15 local time (18:15 UTC)
