The SSI Technician's Terminal - a Journey - York Section
04 Mar 2021 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Section: York Section
SSI became part of the operational UK rail system in 1985, evolving from concepts developed in the late 1970s at British Rail Research. This is the well known part of the SSI revolution, but you cannot do much with SSI without the redoubtable Technician’s Terminal. Whilst it started life as little more than a teletype and tape recorder, it rapidly became a small cubicle next to the SSI which “did the job”. Apart from ongoing recording media obsolescence issues, many may think that it has not really changed a lot. Be that as it may, obsolescence has really caught up with the system now, and Park Signalling’s MT04 is the “state of the art” replacement. This paper tells the Technician’s Terminal story, where it is now, and where it is going on a changing railway.
