Welcome to the fifth IRSE York Section Paper in 2021! We will be visited virtually by Network Rail’s Safety Task Force Lead, Nick Millington. Nick is a Chartered Civil Engineer, a Chartered Project Manager and has undertaken numerous roles from the bottom to the top of the industry in his 30-year career, including maintenance, asset management and project delivery. Nick will provide an update on the work of Network Rail’s Safety Task Force, including:

The historic risk trend of trackworker safety, including the ORR’s recent 2 improvement notices
The importance of accurate data and information to make decisions
What we are doing to eliminate and reduce the risk of track workers being struck by trains
How we are modernising maintenance, to reduce trackworker safety risk
Using technology to reduce the risk of human error
How we are engaging our front line and listening to them
Being aware of potential safety risk transfer
The progress made over 18 months, and what the next 18 months will hold
Upskilling our front-line teams on non-technical skills
Our plans to simplify planning, the safety standards and the safety responsibilities
The future: accessing our railway safely every time
