York Section - ‘Digital Railway’ – The Future of Control Command Systems
21 Jan 2021 5:30 PM - 7:00 PM
Section: York Section
DIGITAL has become one of the most overworked words in our language today with the result that its meaning is all too often lost. Network Rail’s Digital Railway project is an umbrella term which embraces many sub-projects with a common theme. S&T Engineers not directly involved often ask “Just what does Digital Railway mean and what will it deliver?” Perhaps the rails will be 10110011011 mm apart in future?

Our guide through the digital maze tonight is Nicola Furness who joined British Rail as a Graduate Engineering Management Trainee in the S&T department at Reading. Following jobs at Exeter, Plymouth and Swindon, she became the Regional Signal Engineer at Manchester during which time the Ansaldo Interlocking at Manchester South was commissioned.

She then moved to work for Network Rail’s Head of Signalling overseeing the Acceptance of New Technology. From there she became Programme Engineering Manager for the ETCS pilot installation on the Cambrian line leading to its commissioning in 2011. She has been directly involved with ETCS (European Train Control System) development ever since and is now Network Rail’s Engineering Expert (Europe CCS).

Tonight’s subject, ‘Digital Railway – The Future of Control Command Systems’, covers a multitude of topics from implementing the UK national Deployment Plan for ETCS in a sustainable manner to the benefits of Automatic Train Operation (ATO). Other key topics are the future architecture needed for CCS; the collection and use of data and the efficient commissioning of digital systems in the modern rail environment. Nicola has plenty of scope for an engrossing presentation on the direction of travel of ‘Railway Signalling and Communications’ for the next generation of S&T Engineers.
