With the kind support of Signet Solutions offering the event free of charge, the IRSE Younger Members are pleased to invite you to an IRSE Exam Preparation Workshop focusing on Modules 2, 3 and 5 but may be a useful contribution to your Study Plan if attempting Modules 1 or 7, as it can help expand your underpinning knowledge.
We intend specific streams directed towards the technical questions for Modules 2, 3 and 5, where appropriate making use of Signet’s practical training facilities for mainline mechanical and colour light signalling: trackside equipment, interlockings, panels and an AHB level crossing.
However there will also be opportunities to use this to increase equipment domain knowledge, this is particularly relevant to Module 5 and supports others; however more general demonstration sessions should also useful for those who may not be studying for a specific exam module this year, but looking to further their general railway signalling education. The final determination of the sessions which will be offered will be determined by responses to questions asked when booking a place using Eventbrite. Each participant will be able to select which of several parallel sessions in a timetable slot best suits their needs; realistically the decision to cover "Layout Design" or "Control Tables" is likely to determine the entire weekend, but other choices can be more of a "mix-and-match".
Those focusing on an exam module may be invited to prepare notes on a specific exam question or topic to bring to the event – this will help you get the most out of the sessions. Sometimes those having all the relevant knowledge do struggle with the technique for answering IRSE Exam style questions and this will also be covered during the weekend.
There will be an option to sit a mock exam on the Sunday morning. Although after the deadline for submission of Sponsorship Declaration Forms, the event is some weeks before the final deadline for online applications, so could be used to inform your final decision regarding sitting the exam in October. Note that significant changes in the exam have been announced and 2020 may be your last opportunity to undertake in present format!
In addition to building domain knowledge, helping with exam preparation and providing an opportunity to undertake CPD, the event allows those from different companies and with various levels of experience to meet each other in an informal setting. After the event on the Saturday evening there will be a drink at a nearby venue, followed by a meal at which everyone is welcome. These are unfunded and participating in the meal will require a non-returnable £10 deposit so that a suitable venue can be booked for the correct number.
The event is run by volunteers, so any offers of assistance will be very gratefully received, either helping with demonstrations or exam-focused classes, or contributing to the smooth running of the day. This would be a good CPD opportunity and may help demonstrate certain competencies toward IEng/CEng registration etc.
The IRSE YMs are grateful that once again Signet Solutions have kindly offered to host this event at no charge and will also supply refreshments during both days. Participants should arrange their own travel and any local accommodation required. It appears that there may be engineering work around Market Harborough entailing diversion via Corby and potentially adding an hour to rail journeys; look at it as an opportunity to get some customer experience and encounter a variety of forms of signalling, but do factor it into your travel plans.
