With the kind permission of the East Lancashire Railway (ELR), the IRSE Minor Railways Section will hold its AGM at The Bury Transport Museum. The AGM will be followed by visits to signalling installations down the line on Saturday 22nd June. On Sunday 23rd June with the kind permission of Keolis Amey Metrolink, a visit to the Metrolink Depots and Network Management Centre (NMC) has been arranged.
On the completion of the business of the AGM we will collect a packed meal and walk the short distance across the road to the ELR Bolton Street Station where we will join the restored heritage diesel train to Heywood, the southern terminus of the line. After a few minutes there we will re-join the diesel train which will then travel back along the East Lancs Railway to Bury Bolton Street and on to Ramsbottom where we will leave the train to visit the signal box at the end of the station platform. After inspecting the signalling installations at Ramsbottom the party will join the next train to Rawtenstall, which this time should be steam hauled. At Rawtenstall, which is the northern terminus of the line, there is just time to visit the café and shop while the locomotive runs round, then it is back on the train to return to Bury, Bolton Street station where we will leave the train. Then we will walk to the end of the platform to inspect the signal box then the visit will finish at about 17:30.
There is no charge to attend the AGM and tea & coffee will be available on arrival. There is a registration fee of £34 for the visits. A packed lunch will be provided before joining the train at Bury Bolton Street station. Hi-Vis and strong shoes are recommended for this visit.
The Sunday morning visit to the Metrolink is optional and will commence at 10:30 at the Queens Road tram stop. After a tour of the Queens Park Depot we will travel to Trafford Depot by tram to tour the Metrolink NMC and tram maintenance shed. The visit will finish at 14:45.
