About the Exam

The Advanced Diploma in Railway Control Engineering (previously known as "the IRSE Professional Exam") provides one of the main routes to corporate membership of the IRSE and can provide additional qualifications for professional registration. It tests candidates' knowledge of railway signal and telecoms principles and practices.

  • Requires completion of Module A Certificate Exam first
  • You must be a IRSE member to sit these exams
  • Comprises three modules: B, C, and D (in addition to Module A)
  • Exam for Modules BCD available once a year (October)
  • Fee: £585 for all 3 modules (£195 each)
  • Format: 3 separate 110 minutes long exams. Each exam includes 3 essay type questions.

Additional Info

  • The cost is GBP £585 per person, with no discounts available.
  • Each exam takes 110 minutes, an allocation made up of 10 minutes to read the questions, 90 minutes for the examination and 10 minutes to submit any handwritten/drawn answers .
  • There are 4 timeslots to choose from (starting at 04:00, 06:45, 09:30 and 12:15 UTC) - please note that all times are given in UTC which could be different to your local time.
  • There are no exam centres - you are responsible for providing your own device (Windows, MacOS or Linux) with webcam, a suitable quiet environment with reliable internet without firewall or software download restrictions.
  • You will be monitored throughout your exam by remote invigilation software.
  • You will be required to download and test that the remote invigilation software is working at least 3 weeks before exam day (by 13 September).
