Membership of the IRSE is open to any person engaged or interested in the management, planning, design, installation, maintenance, manufacture or operation of railway signalling and train control, railway telecommunications or associated equipment and systems.
We also welcome as members people who are engaged in research, development and innovation in these and related fields of activity.
A wide range of membership grades or categories is available to suit everybody, whatever your role and interest in the profession may be. We particularly encourage young people to join at an early stage in their career.
For the grades of Fellow, Member and Associate Member, you generally have to have a combination of academic or technical qualifications and relevant experience or to have passed the IRSE's examination.
Affiliate and Accredited Technician grades of membership cater for the needs of students and trainees early in their careers, technicians and IRSE Licence holders.
The grade of Affiliate is also suitable for people who may not be technically qualified but who are interested benefitting from participation in IRSE activities.
The Affiliate grade is also appropriate for those aspiring to eventually become an Associate Member or Member, but first need to acquire the qualifications and experience necessary for admission to these grades.
If you require help in deciding which is the right grade for you, the information in the "more information" section at the right hand side of the page will help. You can also contact our membership & registration manager. In addition, there are a number of IRSE Sections and Contact Officers around the world, who may be able to help you with membership applications. Visit the "Near You" page for more details.
When you become a member of the IRSE, you are bound by the terms and conditions of our "Membership Terms" document, which is sets out our obligations to you, and your obligations to us. A copy of this document is available via the link to the right of this page.
