4G radio coverage in London Underground’s Tunnels – London & SE Section
25 Feb 2021 6:00 PM - 8:00 PM
Section: London & South East section (londonse@irse.org)
The London & South East section bring you another online presentation on 25 February 2021.

Join us this February for a lecture by Haider Gillani, Dr Dimitris Kaltakis & Robert Frith on 4G radio infrastructure on the Jubilee Line.

The presentation will cover Transport for London’s recently deployed 4G/LTE capable neutral host radio infrastructure on the Jubilee line; outlining some key facts regarding the build while presenting the architecture, challenges and performance statistics. It will also discuss the current status of cellular technologies and Standards (5G-NR/4G-LTE) and the use of these for mission & safety critical services/applications such as FRMCS which will be the successor to GSM-R. Lastly, it will show how Signalling renewal programmes could utilise such critical services and take advantage of a 4G/5G capable neutral host infrastructure.

The presentation will be given by:

Haider Gillani, who is currently the Principal Engineering Leader for Radio Systems at Transport for London. As part of this role, he leads the delivery, operations and maintenance of a wide range of radio systems across TfL; including but not limited to the LU Operational Radio (Connect), Emergency Services Radio and the 4G/LTE systems. Haider’s priorities include maintaining the TfL Wireless standard in line the business demands and industry best practice, engaging and collaborating with other parts of the business, standardising bodies and other metro systems to ensure alignment on technology policy and radio strategy. Previously Haider has held various engineering roles in public and private sector delivering projects across the globe and has extensive experience in network planning, deployment, testing, optimisation and benchmarking. Haider received his MSc degree from Kings College London in 2010. He also holds the MSP certification and is a member of the IET.

Dr Dimitris Kaltakis, Senior Product Manager (radio/cellular), Transport for London. Dimitris has considerable experience in shaping, designing and delivering critical telecommunications infrastructure within complex environments. He possesses expert knowledge of several radio Standards and wireless technologies. In his current role within Transport for London he owns, manages and maintains pan-TfL radio and wireless systems roadmaps for providing direction over a 5-year horizon. He is also the Design Lead for multi-million-pound projects, leading internal and external design teams from concept design to delivery. Dimitris received his PhD degree from University of Surrey in 2009. He is a Chartered Engineer and a member of the IET.

Robert Frith MEng CEng MIMechE – Programme Engineering Manager, TfL. Robert has worked on major transport infrastructure upgrades for both TfL and Network Rail, delivering across a wide range of asset types. He is currently leading the engineering delivery of the Piccadilly Line Upgrade.

This will be an online presentation using GoTo Meeting. Details will be sent before the meeting to those that register.
