With the kind permission of the Dean Forest Railway (DFR), the IRSE Minor Railways Section is arranging a Technical Visit to view the railway and its signalling and telecommunications on Saturday 28th January 2020. Those of you who were at the sections technical seminar at Kidderminster on the 16th November would have heard about of the innovative train detection and level crossing systems being used on this railway.
The DFR opened its first 200 yards of track in 1970 with the aim of preserving the last remaining section of the Severn and Wye Railway, they now operate the 41/2 mile line from Lydney Junction to Parkend with an operating base and museum at Norchard.
The final details of the day for the technical visit are still under development but are expected to be as follows. After registration at Lydney Junction DFR station we will view the local signalling, then on to a special diesel train to travel from Lydney Junction to Norchard, stopping at signalling installations on the way. At Norchard there will be a stop to allow time to buy some refreshment and view the fixed installations and the museum where we are planning a guided tour. After the stop at Norchard we will continue to Whitecroft and Parkend viewing the signalling on the way. The special train will then return to Lydney Junction at the end of the visit.
For more information on the DFR click hereThere is car parking at the National Rail Lydney station which is adjacent to the DFR Lydney Junction station. The start time will enable travel to Lydney by Cross Country or Transport for Wales connecting services in the morning at the start of the visit.
There will be a reservation fee of £42 for this visit.
For those staying nearby, we are planning a further use of our special train into the evening when we will be arranging for a supper to be served. Details and the cost of this will be available some time during January 2020. Please register on the form attached.
PPE in the form of Hi-Vis and strong shoes are advised for this visit. Please complete the registration form below
