New technologies - the catalyst for change in the rail industry - London & SE local section
24 Oct 2019 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM
Section: London & South East

We face an unprecedented pace of change as we move towards a post digital era - nearly all business have already completed or are undergoing some degree of digital transformation. The Digital Railway strategy sets out a blueprint for modernisation in the next 15 years for the core infrastructure. There are a number of emerging technologies that will drive the next waves of innovation and we should embrace these technologies in order to differentiate our organisations and to drive increased value in a competitive landscape.

This presentation will consider:

  • the new technologies and the principles behind these technologies including distributed ledger technology (DLT), artificial(assisted) intelligence (AI), extended reality (XR) and quantum computing and how these technologies will be a catalyst for change; the rail industry needs to meet the challenge of future multimodal journey options including ride sharing application, autonomous vehicles, drone based taxis, personal vehicles, and the challenges that Rail Transportation will face from new connected modes of transportation, and become integrated into one of many options that the passenger will have;
  • the application of new technologies, and collaboration that will enable innovation;
  • the security implications and considerations, including cyber security when mixing and supporting legacy and connected infrastructure; and
  • the models that we will need to engage, introduce and collaborate with Innovators, SMEs and the large organisations.

This presentation will be delivered by Mike Hewitt, former Chief Technology Officer for ADComms. Mike has over 30 years’ experience in telecoms, project delivery and customer focused roles, specialising in Network Infrastructure and Cyber Security. Mike is currently focused on bringing innovation, digital solutions and secure networks to the UK Public Sector to change the experience of the customer’s connected journey.
