Minor Railways Section technical visit to Fawley Hill Railway and Museum

With the kind permission of the Fawley Museum Society Limited, the IRSE Minor Railways Section has arranged a visit to the privately-owned museum formed from the collection of the railway heritage of the late Sir William McAlpine.
The museum is private and is therefore not generally open to the public.
This is a most worthwhile visit, as this unique museum includes a working 11/4 mile long standard gauge railway, complete with signalling and signal boxes on the steepest adhesion-worked railway line in the UK with a ruling gradient of 1:13. Trains are usually worked by the Huntswell Clarke 0-6- 0T steam locomotive built in 1913 and used on McAlpine civil engineering contracts. The signal box was from the Midland Railway, recovered from Shobnall Maltings near Burton on Trent. The collections in the museum of railway history and through the grounds, contain displays of items which will interest everyone. Trains run throughout the afternoon until 16:30 and are free to visitors.
This is a further event arranged to celebrate the Minor Railways Section’s 10th Year and the section have been offered a limited number of tickets to this invitation only museum.
The Museum is located about 3 miles outside Henley-on-Thames and some two miles from a main road. Henley station is in the town centre. There is no public transport to the site, so transport or an arranged lift is essential. The museum opens at 12:00 with the adjacent free car park, opening at 11:30.
There is a pop-up café at the rear of the station selling Tea, Coffee and soft drinks and some food. Picnic locations are also available around the station area.
There is a registration fee of £19 for this visit. Due to the notice period specified by the museum society, the closing date for applications is 24th July 2019. Places will be available on a first come first served basis, so get your application in early.
