The IRSE recognises that the exchange of ideas and information is critical to both the industry and also to an individual’s own career success. Even in the age of the Internet, meeting other professionals at technical (and social) events provides a facility for networking and learning. Whilst the main Institution headquarters is in London. to facilitate such meetings, local sections have been formed in a number of countries.

Local Activities
Outside the UK, there are sections in:

  • Australasia
  • Hong Kong
  • India
  • Indonesia
  • Malaysia
  • The Netherlands
  • North America
  • Singapore
  • Southern Africa
  • Switzerland.

Within the UK, there are five provincial sections:

  • Midland and North Western
  • Plymouth
  • Scottish
  • Western
  • York

There is also a section specialising in Minor Railways.

Each section organises its own activities and liaises with the main IRSE organisation on membership matters and the organisation of technical visits and conventions.

Younger Members
The Younger Members also hold meetings, conferences and technical visits aimed specifically at engineers undertaking their initial training and development. Membership is automatic for all members of the Institution up to the age of 35.
