Valise is a virtual balise system which builds on recent advances in vision-based positioning for autonomous cars and adapts them for the rail environment. It offers an alternative to track-mounted transponders and balises.
Its lower cost and increased flexibility unlocks the potential for many high value applications which cannot economically be delivered with today's more expensive physical positioning infrastructure.
This talk provides an update on the progress of Valise technology being developed by RDS in partnership with Network Rail, First Group, Balfour Beatty Rail and NSL.
It will cover the main principles, the safety approach and the initial applications in track survey, platform stopping and temporary speed restrictions.
