Younger Members
The principle objective of the Younger Members (YM) is to contribute to and improve the benefits that the IRSE provides for its younger members. This is achieved by providing a focus within the Institution for the co-ordination of YM events and communications.

The YM arrange several events in the UK every year. These usually include a seminar, an IRSE examination review meeting and meetings with YM groups from other institutions. Feedback is sought to enable the YM to plan events for the future to help meet the professional development needs of younger members.

The YM also strive to raise awareness of the benefits that the IRSE offers to younger members and to understand the issues and topics relevant to younger members, so they may be raised and addressed through events and communications.

The YM support the initiatives of the IRSE Council, Committees and Sections for younger members. The YM Committee aims to encourage the Institution’s other Committees and Sections to ensure that the needs of their local younger members are met through appropriate representation within their events and organisations.

The YM Forum, established in 2007, continues to grow from strength to strength. Having published two technical papers on Train Detection and Automatic Train Operation, the forum will be commencing with the discussion and preparation of the next technical subject. This web based forum encourages links with younger members throughout the world. The forum is always looking for new participants, please get in touch to find out more.

The IRSE professional examination is very relevant to younger members and provides a way of learning about and demonstrating your knowledge of railway signalling and communications and allied topics. For further details about the examination and the support available to study for the examination, see the IRSE exam page in the careers area of this site.

Next event :

Over previous years we have run a number of workshops to help young engineers prepare for the IRSE professional exams. So far this year we have run a principles workshop focused towards module 2 and 3 of the exam and now we are pleased to offer a chance to get a closer look at some common signalling equipment used on the UK network to help you prepare for the module 5 examination in October. This workshop will be held in Derby on Saturday 14 August 2010. Further details and an application form on the right of this page.
