The process of professional development is a crucial part of your career. In a world of changing technologies, keeping abreast of new developments and undertaking appropriate training is vital in maintaining your level of competence. Those seeking registration as Chartered or Incorporated Engineers or Engineering Technician with Engineering Council UK (ECUK) will need to be able to demonstrate that they have undertaken appropriate professional development. As well as attending seminars, conferences and training courses, development of your competences can also be achieved through independent structured learning. Making sure your skills are broadened and are kept up to date should be ongoing throughout your working life. IRSE strongly encourages its members to therefore adopt a Continuing Professional Development (CPD) approach to their careers and to encourage those under their supervision to do the same.
Recording your professional development
Professional Development Record (PDR) ring binder files, which enable you to log all your professional development activities, are available from the publications & goods page. The PDR will guide you through the professional development process and assist in planning and recording lifelong learning in a structured way. This self-management tool can be used by students and more mature members alike to produce a personal portfolio of all professional development. Such a record serves as a very useful single point of reference and could be invaluable when job-hunting.
